A total of 1,090 personnel from the Police, Fire Services, Home Guard & Civil Defence, and Correctional Services have been awarded Gallantry and Service Medals on the occasion of Independence Day 2025, recognising their exceptional bravery, dedication, and distinguished service.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 233 personnel have been conferred with the Medal for Gallantry (GM), 99 have received the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 have been honoured with the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).
Gallantry Awards
The Medal for Gallantry is presented for rare and conspicuous acts of courage in saving lives, protecting property, preventing crime, or apprehending criminals, often at considerable personal risk.
Of the 233 Gallantry Medals awarded this year, 226 went to Police personnel, six to Fire Service personnel, and one to the Home Guard & Civil Defence. Region-wise, 152 awardees served in Jammu & Kashmir, 54 in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, three in the North-East, and 24 in other regions.
Service Medals
The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service honours a special record of exceptional service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service recognises valuable contributions marked by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
This year, 89 PSMs were awarded to Police personnel, five to Fire Service, three to Civil Defence & Home Guard, and two to Correctional Services. For the MSM, 635 went to Police personnel, 51 to Fire Service, 41 to Civil Defence & Home Guard, and 31 to Correctional Services.
