The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, warmly welcomed H.E. Mr. Prabowo Subianto, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. President Subianto’s visit marks a historic moment, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of India’s first Republic Day in 1950, when President Sukarno of Indonesia was the Chief Guest.

Strengthening India-Indonesia Ties

During the meeting, President Murmu emphasized the deep civilizational ties between India and Indonesia, which span thousands of years. Highlighting shared values of pluralism, inclusiveness, and the rule of law, she noted that these principles continue to shape contemporary relations between the two nations.

President Murmu expressed gratitude to President Subianto for honoring India’s Republic Day celebrations as the Chief Guest, underscoring the symbolic importance of his presence in furthering bilateral relations.

Historical and Cultural Links

The President recalled the ancient connections between the two nations, including the ‘Bali Jatra’ observed in Odisha, which celebrates the maritime journeys of Indian traders to Bali and other parts of the Indo-Pacific region.

Expanding Cooperation

President Murmu highlighted the significant potential for expanding bilateral trade and investments, given the geographic proximity and similarities in economic structures of both countries. She noted emerging areas of collaboration, particularly in defense and space, as key components of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The President also reaffirmed Indonesia’s pivotal role in India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. Both leaders acknowledged their countries’ contributions to the Global South, with ongoing cooperation in multilateral platforms such as ASEAN, G-20, and BRICS.

President Subianto’s visit is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and open new avenues for collaboration in various sectors, reflecting the enduring friendship between India and Indonesia.
