Prayagraj: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath confirmed on Wednesday that the situation at Sangam in Prayagraj is under control following a tragic stampede during the Mahakumbh 2025. The incident, which occurred near the Sangam Nose, has reportedly left at least 17 people dead. The chief minister urged devotees to follow administrative instructions, avoid crowded areas, and take their holy dip at the nearest ghats to ensure safety.
In a post on X, CM Yogi emphasized the importance of order and caution:
“Mahakumbh-2025, Prayagraj, dear devotees, please take your holy bath at the ghat nearest to you and avoid heading towards the Sangam Nose. Kindly follow all administrative instructions and cooperate in maintaining order.”
The stampede took place in the Sangam area ahead of the second Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya, a significant occasion for pilgrims participating in the Mahakumbh. Injured individuals were immediately transported to the temporary hospital in Sector 2 of the Mela area for treatment.
PM Modi and Centre Respond Swiftly
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively monitoring the situation, holding discussions with CM Yogi Adityanath twice within an hour on Wednesday. The prime minister directed authorities to implement immediate relief measures and ensure the well-being of those affected. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended support, pledging full assistance from the Centre.
Akharas Adjust Plans Amid Tragedy
In light of the stampede, several Akharas decided to cancel the holy dip for the day. The Akhara Parishad has appealed to devotees to participate in the ritual on Vasant Panchami, scheduled for February 3.
