New Delhi, January 30, 2025: Indian Railways has set a new operational record by running 364 outward trains from Prayagraj on Mauni Amavasya, facilitating the return of devotees after their holy dip in the Sangam. The initiative, announced by Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, also included 77 inward trains, ensuring seamless transportation for the massive influx of pilgrims.
Railway Operations at an Unprecedented Scale
The 364 outward-bound trains included 142 regular services and 222 special trains arranged for the Mahakumbh Mela. Indian Railways coordinated closely with the state government and Mela administration, with real-time monitoring from a central war room in Rail Bhavan. Senior railway officials, including the Chairman & CEO of the Railway Board and the General Managers of three railway zones, oversaw the operations to maintain efficiency and passenger safety.
On Mauni Amavasya alone, the following operations were carried out:
- North Central Railway: 280 trains (including inward and outward services), with 157 being Maha Kumbh Mela special trains.
- Northern Railway: 88 trains, including 28 special trains.
- North Eastern Railway: 73 trains, with 37 special trains.
Enhanced Passenger Facilities and Safety Measures
To manage the massive crowd efficiently, the Railways established large holding areas where passengers could wait comfortably before boarding. Devotees were advised to follow administrative guidelines for a smooth and safe travel experience.
Long-Term Rail Plan for Mahakumbh Mela
Throughout the Mahakumbh Mela, Indian Railways has planned to operate approximately 13,450 trains, comprising 10,028 regular services and over 3,400 special trains. To date, more than 1,900 special trains have already been deployed. Certain train routes have been modified, and select terminals have been shifted from Prayagraj to Subedarganj to streamline traffic management.
The Indian Railways’ massive transport operation underscores its commitment to ensuring the smooth movement of pilgrims during one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
