As millions of devotees gather at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj for Mahakumbh 2025, the event has transcended its traditional religious significance to become a vibrant confluence of literature, culture, and knowledge. The Central Government, through various ministries, has curated numerous exhibition pavilions to enrich the intellectual and cultural experiences of the attendees. A standout initiative in this endeavor is the National Book Trust’s (NBT) Reading Lounge, which has quickly become a focal point for visitors seeking literary engagement.
NBT Reading Lounge: A Literary Sanctuary
Located inside the Namami Gange Pavilion at Sector 1, Parade Ground, Prayagraj, the NBT Reading Lounge offers a collection of 619 book titles, spanning Indian philosophy, culture, and the Kumbh Mela. Popular titles such as ‘Kumbh Ke Mela Mein Mangalvasi’, ‘Bharat Mein Kumbh’, and ‘A Visit to Kumbh’ are available, alongside works in Hindi, English, and other regional languages to cater to the diverse linguistic backgrounds of devotees. Books authored by young writers under the Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana are also prominently displayed, encouraging budding literary talent.
Ashish Rai, NBT’s marketing officer, highlighted the high demand for cultural literature, noting the popularity of books like ‘The Ganga’, ‘Veda Kalpataru’, and ‘Ancient Tamil Legend’ among non-Hindi-speaking devotees. Furthermore, visitors have the opportunity to purchase books at a 25% discount, making the joy of reading accessible to all.
Mobile Book Exhibition and National E-Library App
Expanding beyond the Reading Lounge, NBT has introduced the ‘NBT Pustak Parikrama’—a Mobile Book Exhibition featuring 1,150 book titles. A specially designed exhibition bus traverses the Kumbh campus, allowing devotees to browse and purchase books conveniently.
In addition to physical books, the Ministry of Education is promoting digital literacy through the National E-Library app. Devotees are being guided on how to install the app on their mobile devices and access a vast collection of e-books via QR codes, broadening the reach of literature and knowledge.

A New Dimension to Mahakumbh
The NBT Reading Lounge and associated initiatives are redefining Mahakumbh 2025 as more than a religious gathering. By integrating literature, culture, and digital knowledge, the event fosters a holistic experience that connects devotees with spiritual, historical, and contemporary narratives. This intellectual infusion complements the festival’s spiritual essence, establishing Mahakumbh as a unique blend of faith and learning.
