CCPA Fines Vision IAS ₹3 Lakh for Misleading UPSC 2020 Result Advertisement

0

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has fined Vision IAS ₹3 lakh for misleading advertisements about the UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE) 2020 results. This action was taken to protect consumer rights and ensure that advertisements comply with the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

What Happened?

Vision IAS claimed in an advertisement:
“10 in Top 10 selections in CSE 2020 from various programs of Vision IAS.”

While the ad featured the names and photos of successful candidates, it failed to mention the specific courses they took. This omission created a false impression that all the top candidates were enrolled in its classroom foundation course, which was untrue.

Findings by CCPA:

  • Rank 1 was a classroom student of the GS Foundation Course (₹1,40,000), but others opted for different, less expensive programs:
    • 6 candidates took only Mains test series.
    • 2 candidates enrolled for the Abhyaas Prelims mock test (₹750).
    • 1 candidate chose the Prelims test series.
  • The test series and mock tests played a minor role compared to the comprehensive Foundation Course. Many candidates cleared other stages (Prelims, Mains, and Interview) independently.

Why This Matters:

By hiding details about specific courses, Vision IAS misled potential students into believing all its programs had equally high success rates. Transparency in such ads is crucial to help students make informed decisions about enrolling in coaching programs.

CCPA’s Actions:

  • A fine of ₹3 lakh was imposed on Vision IAS.
  • The authority highlighted that similar practices are common among coaching centers. To date, the CCPA has issued 46 notices to various institutes and imposed fines totaling ₹74.6 lakh on 23 coaching institutes for false advertisements and unfair trade practices.

Final Note:

This action serves as a warning to coaching centers to avoid misleading claims. Young aspirants deserve transparency to make educated decisions about their future.

On January 22, 2025, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Vidyadhiraja Vidyapeetom Sainik School in Alappuzha, Kerala. This school is part of the government’s initiative to set up 100 new Sainik Schools across the country, designed in partnership with NGOs, trusts, private schools, and state government schools.

During the inauguration, Shri Rajnath Singh highlighted that the school would play an important role in teaching children the values of discipline, dedication, self-control, and service to the nation. He emphasized that Sainik Schools combine academic learning with physical and mental training, helping students grow into well-rounded individuals who are not only prepared for the Armed Forces but for leadership roles in society.

He also shared his confidence that the youth of India will be crucial in helping the nation become “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047. Quoting Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he urged every Indian to contribute to overcoming challenges and achieving the nation’s goals. Shri Rajnath Singh mentioned that the students at this school would be part of a generation with strong potential to learn new technologies and excel in academics and character.

The Raksha Mantri pointed out that the term ‘Sainik’ represents more than just a warrior—it also symbolizes the qualities of discipline, dedication, self-control, and selfless service, values that are essential to nation-building. He also praised the Sainik School’s focus on providing equal opportunities for girls, as the government works towards empowering women in the Armed Forces.

Shri Rajnath Singh also spoke about India’s progress towards self-reliance, particularly in sectors like health, communication, industry, transport, and defense, and highlighted the role of youth in driving the country’s development. He commended the school’s management for combining modern education with the right values, preparing students to serve the nation with pride and discipline.

Akharas at Maha Kumbh 2025: Tradition, Spirituality, and Gender Equality

The Akharas, which have long been the spiritual backbone of the Maha Kumbh, continue to be at the heart of the event, preserving traditions and sects of Sanatan Dharma. The term ‘Akhara’ comes from ‘Akhand,’ meaning indivisible, and these religious orders, dating back to the time of Adi Guru Shankaracharya in the 6th century, have shaped the Kumbh Mela for centuries. Today, the Akharas not only serve as places of worship but as centers of spiritual learning and physical training, helping millions connect to their faith.

At the Maha Kumbh, Akharas are known for their distinct customs and leadership structures, which include spiritual learning through scriptures and physical defense through martial arts. These practices are maintained by the Mahamandaleshwaras, the leaders who ensure the Akharas’ spiritual and organizational integrity. Their leadership is crucial to the rituals, processions, and overall Kumbh experience.

Among the 13 Akharas, the Shaiva, Vaishnav, and Udaseen sects stand out. The Shaiva Akharas, led by Naga Sannyasis who worship Lord Shiva, are known for their spiritual and martial prowess. The Naga Sannyasis, particularly those from the Juna Akhara, are revered for their ascetic practices and martial skills, playing an essential role in the grand processions and rituals at the Kumbh, especially during the Shahi Snaan ceremonies.

The Shri Panch Dashnam Aavahan Akhara, which has been part of the Kumbh Mela for over 1,200 years, is another key player, preserving ancient traditions like the Chhari Yatra, a sacred procession. The Aavahan Akhara, led by Mahant Gopal Giri, continues to combine tradition with modernity in its contributions to the Kumbh.

The Vaishnav Akharas, including the Shri Panch Nirmohi Ani Akhada and the Shri Panch Nirvani Ani Akhada, also have a significant role. These Akharas focus on the worship of Lord Vishnu, particularly in his incarnation as Lord Hanuman, raising Dharm Dhwajas (religious flags) to signify divine protection for devotees.

A historic shift is occurring at the Maha Kumbh 2025, with over 1,000 women being initiated into the prominent Akharas for the first time. The Shri Panchadashnam Juna Akhara, the largest and one of the most influential, has already initiated over 200 women into Sannyas, reflecting the Akharas’ commitment to gender equality. This Akhara has also renamed its female monks’ organization to Sannyasini Shri Panchadashnam Juna Akhara, giving it a respected identity within the spiritual community.

The Maha Nirvani Akhara, one of the wealthiest and most influential, has also been at the forefront of gender empowerment, establishing the position of Mahamandaleshwar for women. Women leaders like Sadhvi Geeta Bharti and Santosh Puri represent this commitment. Along with gender equality, the Maha Nirvani Akhara emphasizes environmental conservation, aligning with the Kumbh’s growing focus on sustainability.

In addition to gender equality, the Kumbh 2025 also witnesses the inclusion of Kinnar Akharas, offering an inclusive space for the Kinnar community, which has long been marginalized. This marks a historic moment, as the Kinnar Akhara now participates in the Maha Kumbh, embodying the values of equality and respect.

The Maha Kumbh 2025 is a celebration of the Akharas’ enduring relevance in India’s spiritual life. These institutions not only safeguard the spiritual and cultural values of Sanatan Dharma but are also evolving to embrace modern ideas like inclusivity and equality. As the grand processions unfold and sacred rituals are performed, the Akharas remain at the heart of the Maha Kumbh, guiding millions of devotees toward spiritual growth, unity, and a deeper connection with the divine.

Truecaller Brings Real-Time Caller ID and Spam Call Blocking to iOS 18 Users

On January 22, 2025, Truecaller announced the launch of its real-time Caller ID and automatic spam call blocking feature for iOS 18 users. This marks the first time that iOS users can enjoy these advanced features, which were previously only available on Android. Truecaller is rolling out these updates globally for paying subscribers of the app, which will likely contribute to a boost in its subscription revenues.

Rishit Jhunjhunwala, CEO of Truecaller, shared his excitement about the launch: “After 15 years of Truecaller’s success, we are thrilled to offer iOS users the same leading Caller ID and spam blocking experience that we have perfected on Android. This new feature expands our market to more iOS users around the world.”

Fredrik Kjell, COO of Truecaller, added, “This launch accelerates our subscription revenue growth and brings us closer to our goal of surpassing 1 billion SEK in recurring revenue. We’re offering iOS users a free trial of the new features, and we believe this will significantly increase our conversion rates on iOS, which are already much higher than on Android.”

As of the end of 2024, around 30 million of Truecaller’s 435 million monthly active users (MAUs) are on iOS. About 750,000 of Truecaller’s 2.6 million paying subscribers are on iOS, and over 40% of Truecaller’s premium revenue comes from iOS users.

Previously, iOS users could only access a limited local database for Caller ID. With this update, Truecaller utilizes its AI capabilities and global database to identify more calls and block spam calls automatically. This is made possible by Apple’s Live Caller ID Lookup framework, which uses advanced encryption to ensure privacy. Truecaller is the first to deploy this new framework on a large scale.

Additionally, Truecaller on iPhone now offers a Premium Family plan, allowing users to share premium benefits, like the AI Assistant, with up to four family members for a low price. In India, the Family plan also includes fraud insurance, protecting up to four family members from scams.

The new features will be available to all Truecaller Premium subscribers at the same pricing as the Android version. Free users will still have access to basic services like ad-supported number search and Verified Business Caller ID.

The auto-blocking of spam calls is available globally, while the new Caller ID feature will be rolled out to all users in the coming days.

How to Enable Truecaller on iOS 18.2:

  1. Ensure you have Truecaller for iPhone version 14.0 or later.
  2. Go to iPhone Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification.
  3. Enable all Truecaller switches and open the Truecaller app again.
