India’s Renewable Energy Growth: 2024 Highlights and 2025 Goals
India is making remarkable progress in its transition to renewable energy, achieving significant growth in solar and wind power in 2024. With a vision of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, the country is setting global benchmarks in clean energy. As of January 2025, India’s total renewable energy capacity has reached an impressive 217.62 GW.
Record-Breaking Achievements in 2024
- Solar Energy Growth:
India added 24.5 GW of solar capacity in 2024, more than doubling the installations from 2023. Utility-scale solar projects accounted for 18.5 GW, with Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu leading the way, contributing 71% of the total. The rooftop solar segment also grew by 53%, with 4.59 GW added, supported by the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which facilitated 7 lakh rooftop installations. - Wind Energy Expansion:
Wind energy saw a 3.4 GW increase, a 21% rise compared to 2023. Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu were the top contributors, accounting for 98% of the new capacity. - Off-Grid Solar Growth:
Off-grid solar capacity grew by 182%, adding 1.48 GW in 2024, improving energy access in rural areas.
Key Government Initiatives
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) played a crucial role in driving renewable energy growth through:
- Green Hydrogen Development: Policies to reduce costs and attract investments in green hydrogen production.
- Manufacturing Boost: Expanding domestic production of solar panels and wind turbines to position India as a global manufacturing hub.
- Grid Infrastructure Investments: Developing inter-state transmission systems to efficiently transport renewable energy from resource-rich states like Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Roadmap for 2025
India’s renewable energy sector is poised for further expansion in 2025, with a focus on overcoming regulatory and financial challenges. Emerging technologies and increased private investments will play a vital role in achieving the country’s ambitious clean energy targets.
With continued efforts, India is solidifying its position as a global leader in the renewable energy revolution, paving the way for a sustainable and green future.
