Chikkamagaluru: A massive wildfire has engulfed Charmadi Ghat, with reports emerging of flames consuming vast forested areas near the Annappa Swamy Temple in Mudigere taluk since Friday night. The fire, which started in Bidirutala village four days ago, has already turned more than 500 acres of forest into ashes.

The wildfire is spreading rapidly, fueled by strong winds, and efforts by the Forest Department and fire brigade to contain the blaze are proving challenging.

Rare Biodiversity at Risk

Charmadi Ghat, known for its rich biodiversity, is home to rare plant species and wildlife. The fire has sparked concern among locals, who fear irreversible damage to the area’s natural wealth. The flames are visible from a distance of up to 10 kilometers, creating panic in surrounding villages.

Allegations of Negligence

Residents have alleged a lack of urgency in response by forest officials, claiming that no action was taken even two hours after the fire was reported. Locals are demanding accountability, stating that such negligence endangers not only the environment but also the safety of nearby communities.

The forest fire highlights the vulnerability of ecologically significant areas like Charmadi Ghat and the pressing need for improved disaster management strategies to safeguard India’s natural heritage.
